What is NACLO?
NACLO (North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad) is a competition for students in grades 6-12. You’ll get to solve puzzles about language for a chance to win a spot to represent the US in the International Linguistics Olympiad.
What is computational linguistics?
Computational linguistics (or CL) is the science of understanding human language using logic, computer algorithms, and math. It is all around us! You use CL whenever you use Google, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, Yahoo, and many other websites and applications. Here are some examples of computational linguistics in action.
How do I register?
Click here to register. Registration is free for all high school and middle school students. Be sure to select Johns Hopkins as your test location.

Puzzles, Pizza, and Prizes
We’ll have a informational training session on Saturday, January 13, 2018, 10am-12:30pm on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. Come to the practice session to learn about computational linguistics and how it’s used in cool research for Google, cell phones, Twitter, and more. You’ll learn new ways to solve problems and puzzles, work together with other students, and earn prizes. Pizza will be served, and anyone is welcome to come to the practice session even if you can’t make it to the competition! Please RSVP if you’re interested (jhu.naclo@gmail.com).
